This November Illustrationcupboard Gallery is delighted to present a unique solo exhibition devoted to the much-loved author and illustrator Shirley Hughes OBE. One of the most popular characters of the modern picture book era her best-known character, Alfie, and his adventures with sister Annie Rose and best friend Bernard, have enchanted readers both young and old for decades. Shirley Hughes's wonderful stories, based in everyday life, have become household favourites. In the words of Philip Pullman, 'Shirley Hughes is a national treasure.' Shirley was born in 1927, and after a year at Liverpool Art School studying costume design, she moved on to the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford. She has written and illustrated over 50 books and sold more than eleven million copies. In both 1977 and 2004 she won the Kate Greenaway Medal, and in 1984 she won the Eleanor Farjeon Award.
