Illustrationcupboard celebrates two iconic animation characters from the 1970s and 1980s – the enigmatic Mr Benn and the longsuffering Danger Mouse.
A bonanza of animation art highlights these classic series and their creators David McKee and Brian Cosgrove. Re-discovered original Mr Benn film cels have been carefully restored and will be shown alongside rare original Benn book illustrations from the late 1960’s.
Brian Cosgrove’s pencil studies of Danger Mouse and Penfold will feature with film cels for the series many of us remember so well. Other film-based artwork will also be on show, such as Charlie and Lola by Lauren Child, Wallace and Gromit by Nick Park and The Lost Thing by 2011 Oscar Winner Shaun Tan.
A special Mr Benn 40th Anniversary silk screen edition (pto) has also been created, unique to the gallery and an edition of only 99, each signed and numbered by the artist. Artwork will start at £450 with the anniversary edition at £950 and original artwork up to £20,000. Signed books include the Benn boxed-set at £95, as well as a selection of the recent books republished by TATE.
David McKee and Brian Cosgrove will be at the gallery at 5.30pm on Thursday 6th October to meet visitors.
