Alexis Deacon biography
Alexis Deacon (b. 1978)
Alexis Deacon graduated in 2001 with a first class honours degree in Illustration from the University of Brighton. Before graduating he was awarded the Burt Brill and Cardens award for the second best degree show at his University in 2000.
The urge to draw has been with Alexis as long as he can remember, ‘I’ve probably drawn compulsively since the age of 3 or 4’. Whenever he got bored playing with a particular toy as a child, rather than put it down and pick up something else as most kids would do he’d put the toy down and pick up a sketchbook to carry the game on through pictures on paper. Alexis’ favourite children’s books are Little Nemo by Winsor McCay and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. He also greatly admires the work of author/illustrators William Steig, Quentin Blake, Raymond Briggs and John Burningham.

Alexis’ second book, Beegu is a story about a friendly alien who ends up lost on planet Earth and was published by Hutchinson in May 2003. Beegu was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2003. Jitterbug Jam, was in collaboration with an American author, Barbara Jean Hicks. It brilliantly explores preconception and prejudice (from both sides) and was published in September 2004 to great acclaim. While You Are Sleeping is a beautiful picture book with breathtaking illustrations about what bedside toys get up to in the night when children are fast asleep. It is published in paperback by Red Fox Picture Books in August 2007.

The Sunday Times review of Beegu states, ‘Alexis Deacon may well be Burnighnham’s heir apparent . . . Deacon’s poignant and understated text is brillilantly served by his illustrations, which carry distant rreminders of some of the best illustrators of the last 100 years and yet still remain uniquely his own.’
