Mairi Hedderwick biography
Mairi Hedderwick was born in Gourock in 1939, and educated at Gourack Primary, and St Columba's School, Kilmalcolm. She is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, and Jordanhill College of Education. Mairi recently received in 2003 an honorary doctorate from Stirling University.

Mairi began here career in books in the 1970's, and her best known and much loved character Katie Morag has been continuously in print since then with now over fourteen titles in the series. These have been translated into numerous foreign editions including Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Japanese and Gaelic.

Katie Morag and her island life is based on Mairi's life-long love of the Hebridean island of Coll where her children were bought up and which is now home to her grandchildren. From being Grannie Island she has become Grannie Mainland, but her heart remains on Coll.

Mairi has also published illustrated books for adults including the sailing travelogue 'Seachange', tracing her journey from East to West Scotland via the Caledonian Canal, other such titles include 'An Eye On The Hebrides', and 'Highland Journey'.
