David McKee biography
David McKee is one of the foremst imaginative and creative talents in pictures of the last thirty years.
His character led stories have enchanted children through three generations, and his best know figures of Mr Benn, Elmer the Elephant and King Rollo has become social and literary icons.
David McKee was born in Devon in 1943. He studied art at Plymouth Art College and went on to produce illustrations for periodicals and newspapers including
. His first children’s book was
Two Can Toucan
. The first edition was published in 1964 and its popularity has led it to be still in print today, published by Andersen Press with the illustrations redrawn by David McKee in 1985.
The first Mr Benn book was published in 1967. This and subsequent stories was made in to one fo the first animation programmes for tlevision which are remmebered and loved by the children of then and then adults of today. Likewise King Rollo has also been turned in to a successful telvsion series. His most famous character Elmer the patwork Elephant is now published in over twenty countries and has recently been translated in to Japanese by David’s good friend ad fellow-illustrator Satoshi Kitamura.
David continues to work as a full time artist and illustrator dividing his time between London and the South of France where he lives with his partner Bakhta who shares his interest in collecting drawings and African tribal art.
